Grid Level 10 ($19.72-$21.40 per hour plus benefits)

Job Description: 

Under the direction of the Manager of Advocacy Services, the Mental Health Advocate is responsible for the provision of formal advocacy services to mentally ill members in order to facilitate the acquisition of benefits and other societal resources.

Skills and Qualities Required: 

Education and Training

  • Diploma in Community Social Service – Mental Health-related preferred.
  • Two years experience in a mental health setting including front line advocacy work in the areas of mental health, income assistance and/or housing.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Typical Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work with people with a mental illness.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, government agencies and other service providers.
  • Ability to create effective and well-reasoned written submissions.
  • Working knowledge of provincial legislation and policies related to income assistance and residential tenancy matters.
  • Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize.
  • Knowledge of advocacy issues and community resources.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Conflict resolution and crisis intervention skills.
