Income and disability assistance for refugees and temporary resident permit holders in BC

As of June 1st, 2008 a regulation change allows people that did not previously meet the citizenship requirements and who were formerly restricted to hardship assistance to receive income assistance or disability assistance.

Eligibility

Applicants in the following categories will now be eligible for regular income assistance or disability assistance, providing of course that they meet all the other criteria for those benefits.

  • people in Canada under a temporary resident permit (or a minister’s permit under the old Immigration Act);
  • people in the process of having a refugee claim (or claim as a protected person) determined; or
  • people subject to a deportation or removal order that cannot be executed.
