Social housing announcements in BC

On January 30th, the BC provincial government announced that they were investing enough money to purchase or lease fifteen new properties to create and protect social housing across the province. The mix of properties includes single-room occupancy (SRO) hotels in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, apartments, former care facilities and a therapeutic community. Nearly half of the units are currently vacant.

Over a year ago, the city of Vancouver and the province announced plans to develop social and supportive housing on twelve city-owned sites. Neither the provincial nor federal government has allocated funding for the projects, even though eight of the projects are slated to start construction this year. Advocates say that they don't believe there is money to build these units and are not hopeful that they will get built in the near future.
