Nova Scotia government reconsidering house arrest welfare rule

Under a new welfare program that took effect August 1, 2001, new welfare recipients sentenced to more than 30 days house arrest will lose their benefits (specified in section 15(2) of the new welfare Regulations.) Vince Calderhead, a longtime Nova Scotia Legal Aid lawyer, says he believes the regulation violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and is ripe for a constitutional challenge. According to an article in the Chronicle Herald dated August 19, 2001 the provincial government is reconsidering the regulation.
