Report finds demand for community services in Cambridge at all-time high

Representatives of the Cambridge and North Dumfries Social Planning Council provided Cambridge city council with its annual Community Trends Report.

At Meals on Wheels the number of subsidized clients more than doubled in 2012, while the Trinity Community Table 2012 had a record-breaking year with 20,266 meals served.

The report shows 2012 was the busiest year yet at The Bridges, Cambridge’s homeless shelter. Overall, there were 19,961 overnight stays in 2012. That is a 24 per cent increase from 16,140 in 2011.

Meanwhile, police report their investigation of elder abuse cases hit an all time-high in 2012, jumping 300 per cent since 2005. Business at the region’s women’s crisis shelters has also hit an all-time high as the number of shelter days accessed by women rose to 25,775.
