Starting salary between $46,000 - $49,000 per annum based on experience.

Job Description: 

Migrant Workers Centre (MWC), formerly West Coast Domestic Workers’ Association, is a non-profit organization dedicated to legal advocacy for migrant workers in British Columbia. Founded in 1986, MWC facilitates access to justice for migrant workers through the provision of legal information, summary advice and representation. MWC also works to advance and promote the labour and human rights of migrant workers through public legal education, law and policy reform work, and test case litigation. MWC is seeking an energetic full time Legal Advocate to work Tuesday-Saturday in its downtown Vancouver office.

The Legal Advocate will provide legal information, referrals, summary advice, and full representation in immigration and employment law to migrant workers who face numerous barriers in accessing justice. The Legal Advocate will have the opportunity to participate in MWC’s public legal education, law reform and community development activities. The Legal Advocate reports to the Executive Director – Staff Lawyer.

Skills and Qualities Required: 

Required qualifications:

• Post-secondary education in law or social sciences, or other relevant qualification
• Knowledge of Canada's immigration laws and policies, especially with respect to the Live-in Caregiver Program and the low-skilled streams of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program
• Knowledge of employment standards
• Excellent advocacy and problem solving skills
• Excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written
• Highly organized and excellent time management skills
• Ability to take initiative and to work in a team environment
• Understanding of trauma-informed approaches and working with marginalized communities
• Cultural competency and ability to work with migrant workers from various cultural communities

Preferred qualifications

• Ability to speak a second language, in particular Tagalog or Spanish preferred
• Experience in the non-profit sector (a minimum of two years is preferred)
• Experience working in the field of immigration law and/or employment law
• Prior experience working as a Legal Advocate

Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Conduct client interviews, and assess and analyze legal problems
• Provide legal advice in immigration law and employment law, under the supervision of MWC’s Staff Lawyer
• Draft legal submissions and correspondence on behalf of clients
• Represent clients in hearings before British Columbia’s Employment Standards Branch
• Maintain detailed client files and protect the confidentiality of all client information
• Refer clients with more complex issues to MWC’s Staff Lawyer
• Write articles for MWC’s monthly newsletter, Migrants’ Voice
• Develop and conduct Public Legal Education workshops and presentations in the Lower Mainland and occasionally in BC outside the Lower Mainland (some travel may be required)
• Assist and cooperate with other staff (the other Legal Advocate, the Staff Lawyer and the Legal Support Coordinator) whenever necessary
