Job Description: 

MWC is a non-profit association that provides free legal assistance and community support to caregivers and other migrant workers in British Columbia. MWC also works to advance the rights of migrant workers through public legal education, law and policy reform, and test case litigation.
Skills and Qualities Required: Preferred Qualifications: Experience providing direct client service in a non-profit organization and knowledge of the Live-in Caregiver and Temporary Foreign Worker Programs, immigration and/or employment standards. This person must be a self-starter with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, computer and organizational skills. The preferred applicant will demonstrate an interest in social justice issues, demonstrate sensitivity to people from diverse social and economic backgrounds and be familiar with non-profit associations in the Lower Mainland. Fluency in Tagalog or Spanish is an asset.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Working out of the fast-paced Migrant Workers Centre (MWC) office in downtown Vancouver, the Legal Support Coordinator will engage in a diverse and challenging workload:

• Client Services and Casework: answering telephone calls and meeting with clients in the MWC office. Handling intake of clients, providing basic information about the Live-In Caregiver Program, Temporary Foreign Worker Program, immigration and employment standards. Interviewing and assessing the needs of clients and providing summary advice under the supervision of the Staff Lawyer and referring complex cases to the senior staff and to other community agencies where appropriate. Drafting letters on behalf of clients. Booking appointments for the Legal Advocates and for the Staff Lawyer.

• Volunteer Management: supervising the MWC’s team of Office Volunteers, and recruiting and training new volunteers.

• File Maintenance and Reporting: maintaining all intake files, and data entry in the client database.

• Office administration: processing memberships and donations, and performing other clerical duties such as filing and ordering office supplies.

• Project work: organizing workshops and annual tax clinic, providing logistical support for projects and events, preparing articles for Migrants’ Voice newsletter.
