Job Description: 

The Justice Education Society has an immediate opening for a
permanent, part-time Court Information Worker. Working 10 hours per week out of the Surrey Provincial Courthouse, the candidate will provide legal assistance in English and Punjabi to court users. The Court Information Worker support the work of the JES Court Information Program for Immigrants. This program provides language-based support for court users, especially immigrants and those whose first language is not English.

Skills and Qualities Required: 

• Oral and written fluency in English
• Strong command of Punjabi and preferably Hindi as well
• Experience working in a professional environment providing service to clients
• Ability to use sound judgment, initiative, tact, and diplomacy with limited supervision
• Demonstrated ability to analyze/assess clients’ problems and provide legal information and referrals based on client’s needs
• Demonstrated ability to effectively liaise with community agencies and other organizations
• Competencies: professional service orientation, results-driven,
team-centered and cooperative

Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Informing and educating clients about the justice system: explaining court documents, legal terminology, and court procedures to help clients better understand their legal rights, options, and next steps
• Referring clients to governmental and non-governmental agencies so that they may receive additional support and/or specialized services – e.g. – legal aid qualification, family justice counsellor appointment, alcohol and drug counselling, etc.
• Working with community organizations to facilitate educational workshops so that settlement workers and immigrants may improve their ability to address legal issues.
• Routine administrative tasks such as annual objectives plans, performance reviews, daily and monthly statistics, weekly timesheets.
