Job Description: 

Migrant Workers Centre (MWC) is seeking a full-time Legal Advocate to provide legal advice to migrant workers and other newcomers to Canada who face numerous barriers to accessing justice, and to coordinate our legal education programs on workplace sexual harassment and labour trafficking.

MWC is a non-profit organization that provides pro bono legal assistance and education to migrant workers in BC. MWC also works to advance fair immigration policy and improved labour standards for migrant workers through law and policy reform and test case litigation.

Skills and Qualities Required: 

Skills and Knowledge Required:

• Post-secondary education in law, or other similar qualification
• Knowledge of workplace sexual harassment, employment law, human rights law, and labour trafficking
• Knowledge of immigration law and of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program is an asset
• Experience with basic legal research
• Experience with writing plain language legal content
• Experience as a project manager in the non-profit sector
• Strong communication and presentation skills
• Strong analytical skills and good judgment
• Experience working with migrant workers and other at-risk newcomer communities
• Ability to speak a second language is an asset
• Valid drivers’ license is an asset
• Prior experience working as a Legal Advocate is an asset

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Responsibilities:

• Provide legal advice to clients who have experienced workplace sexual harassment and/or other employment-related issues under the supervision of MWC’s Staff Lawyer
• Provide referrals to other MWC staff or outside agencies, as appropriate
• Work with the MWC team to develop and deliver public legal education presentations on workplace sexual harassment and labour trafficking in locations across BC (travel may be required)
• Conduct outreach to partner organizations to schedule and coordinate Public Legal Education presentations
• Write articles for MWC’s bi-monthly newsletter, Migrants’ Voice
• Assist and cooperate with other staff whenever necessary

Terms:

• The Legal Advocate will work in MWC’s downtown Vancouver office from Tuesday-Saturday, including one evening per week.
• Salary is $52,000 per year. MWC offers a highly competitive vacation and benefits package.
