Court workers in Nunavut

Inuit court workers act as interpreters and are the watchdogs for cultural differences in the court system. They are sometimes the first people to deal with clients who have legal problems and are members of the community who are respected and trusted to assist. All court workers speak fluent English and Inuktitut.

Nunavut Government Resources

The Nunavut Government website is in Inuktitut, English and French and includes studies, statistics, acts and regulations, studies and news releases. It also houses a living dictionary in Inuktitut, English and French. The Nunavummit Kiglisiniartiit website (GN Evaluation and Statistics Division) is another useful resource, being the statistics branch of Nunavut.

Olympic Displacement

The Geneva based Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions has released a report entitled, Fair Play for Housing Rights: Mega-Events, Olympic Games and Housing Rights (in PDF), about the displacement of over two million people in the last 20 years in seven different Olympic cities. Residential School Settlement Applications

The Residential School Settlement website is the official Court website for the settlement of the Residential Schools Class Actions Litigation. The site is available in English, French and Inuktitut. The Indian residential schools settlement has been approved by the Courts. Now, former students and their families must decide whether to stay in the settlement or remove themselves (opt out). The site has updates on the settlement, applications for claims and opting out, as well as other information. The official government site, Indian Residential Schools Resolution Canada has information on the settlement, the Common Experience Payment, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Toronto's Centre for Spanish Speaking Peoples (CSSP) produced ten legal fact sheets in Spanish that cover such issues as what employers can and cannot ask during a job interview, pay slips, pensions, the rights of people who work as cleaning subcontractors, parental benefits, sexual harassment, disability benefits, eviction, and requirements for second apartments in a house.
